The Second Epiphany

And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.
- Matthew 2:12

you got us out here
with your stellar trickery

we took rutted roads
stayed at one-star motels

only provisions were
sangak wrapped in linen

we almost quit it
for the blisters and confusion

huddled under your supernova
and gave up our bounty

then we discovered
the other truth about

you who cajoles
and pilots and shines

you gave us
no star home

just a warning about
violence at the capital

so we chart our course
into a dicey frontier

orienteering with just
some small gospel

and the scent
of resin on our fingers
